ToastyStats: Fandom statistical analyses
Has anyone written a script to determine the number of tumblr followers who are still active (e.g., have liked or posted anything in the past N days), for a given blog?
I made a subreddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/FandomHistory/
I'm hoping this will be a good place to post all those calls for survey participants for fandom research as well as a good place to ask one's burning questions about where that one ranma fanfic was distributed in 1993 or what that bit of fandom jargon means.
Upcoming maintenance
The Archive will be down for maintenance from 11:00 to 14:00 UTC on Wednesday, November 24. (Find out what time that is for you.) Please follow @AO3_Status on Twitter for updates.
Well folks I've been sitting on this little script for ages and finally decided to just go ahead and publish it. What does it do?
- you can enter any ao3 link - for example, to your bookmarks or an author's works page - and automatically download all the works and series that are linked from that page in the format of your choice
- if your format of choice is epub (sorry, this part doesn't work for other file formats), you can check your fanfic-savin' folder for unfinished fics and automatically update them if there are new chapters
- if you're a dinosaur who uses Pinboard, you can back up all the Pinboard bookmarks you have that link to ao3
- don't worry about crashing ao3 with this! this baby takes forever to run, guaranteed. anyway ao3 won't let me make more than one request per second even if I wanted to so it's quite safe
I've been working on this for about two years and it's finally in a state where it does everything I want and isn't breaking every two seconds, so I thought it was time to share! I hope y'all get some use out of it.
note: this is a standalone desktop app that DOES NOT DO ANYTHING aside from automate clicking on buttons on the ao3 website. Everything this script does, can be done by hand using ao3's regular features. It is just a utility to facilitate personal backups for offline reading - there's no website or server, I have no access to or indeed interest in the fics other people download using this. No plagiarism is happening here, please don't come after me.
Y'all. Y'ALL. if you've ever been like "I should go through my bookmarks and save copies of everything in case stuff gets deleted--but that would take SO LONG"
This will get all your bookmarked fics all downloaded and organized for you
It's literally saving my life, I'm so happy
I can.....I can download all my fics???

Hi! I heard your blog mentioned on the podcast Maximum Film, and they said that you'd recently shared some stats (a bar graph, maybe?) about the increasing number of holiday films recently. Would you mind pointing me to the relevant post(s)? I adore those sorts of stats, and I am very curious about this kind of trend. Thank you! :)

Welcome to my mistletoe covered world.
This Tumblr has been mostly for longer form reviews of holiday content and exhaustive schedule listings of all of the new Christmas viewing, whereas I opine more freely (a.k.a. drone on and on) about trivia and other holiday viewing whatnot over on my Twitter account.
But I'm happy to include the latest stats on new, 2021 Christmas movies here as well.
Currently, we are at a mind-blowing 167 new movies for the season on broadcast, cable and subscription streamers, and that's without counting VOD, DVD, or indies uploaded to platforms like YouTube or Amazon Prime. And that's before we even touch on all the series, specials, concerts, televised parades and holiday TV episodes touching down this year. All in all, we'll probably top 600 new-for-2021 at-home holiday viewing options by year's end, as we're already well past 550.
As for how that compares to past years, well, this year's made-for-TV output alone is more than the first three years I kept track combined…
- 2015…47
- 2016…44
- 2017…65
- 2018…84
- 2019…121
- 2020…116
- 2021…167 and counting
A breakdown of that number, which I expect to increase before December 25th, by outlet…
- Lifetime-34
- Hallmark Channel-31
- Netflix-15
- GAC-13
- Hallmark Movie-9
- BET/BET+-8
- UPtv-8
- PureFlix-6
- VH1-5
- ION-4
- OWN-3
- Tubi-3
- Roku-3
- CBS-2
- Comedy Central-2
- AMC+-2
- Peacock-2
- Hallmark Now-2
- FoxNation-2
- CW-1
- Bounce-1
- Disney Channel-1
- Nick-1
- TVOne-1
- HBOMax-1
- AppleTV+-1
- Disney+-1
- Discovery+-1
- Shudder-1
- Acorn-1
- Crackle-1
- BingeBlackTV-1
Wow! That's quite an impressive increase! And the channel breakdown is also interesting. Thanks for sharing this data, along with all the other work you're doing on this blog. What a lovely service. :)
If you don't mind one more question -- do you have a writeup of your methods for finding all the Christmas-related listings across all the streaming services? Are you searching for keywords like "Christmas" and "holiday" on a bunch of different sites, and/or have you written any code to gather the data for you, or...? I ask because I run a fandom stats blog -- mostly stats about fanfic and other fanworks, but some of my followers also do some analysis about tv & films. I'd love to share any tips or tools with my readers, if you have any.
Thanks again, @sleepykittypaws ... and btw, that is such a great name. :D

I would love to see one like the most tagged as trans, but with percentage of the works including that character, that way the characters with little works would come up
TOASTYSTATS: characters who are tagged with multiple gender identities on AO3
In addition to my longer post about trans, nonbinary, and gender-diverse characters on AO3 [tumblr highlights] [ao3 writeup], I also wanted to highlight a few analyses that I found interesting and would love more insight into from the fans who read/write these characters.
The first is the analysis above showing characters who have canonical tags on AO3 for both "Trans Male [name]" and "Trans Female [name]" -- or, in a few cases, "FTM [name]" and "MTF [name]." (Obviously, this has a lot to do with which tags the AO3 wranglers have currently wrangled, and not just with which fanworks get written; see my full writeup for more thoughts/details.)
Has anyone noticed any interesting patterns in the direction(s) of trans headcanons about characters? And which characters, in particular, are likely to get written about a lot as both trans men and trans women? I am particularly interested to hear from people who read or write any of the above characters, but anyone should feel free to chip in.
Also worth noting -- sometimes characters get tagged in multiple gender-diverse ways, but they're not limited to trans tags:
And here we see, for instance, that Pidge, who gets written about a lot as both a trans man and a trans woman (though much more often as a trans woman), is also tagged often as nonbinary. However, TommyInnit showed a somewhat similar pattern of trans tagging, doesn't get tagged nonbinary very often. I have no further insights, especially as I don't read/write in either of those fandoms, but I find this fascinating and am interested to hear others' reflections.
---
If you want to see which characters have the highest percentages of gender-diverse fanworks, plus lots of other breakdowns, please read my writeup on AO3. (Lots of readers have left thoughtful comments there, too! But I'd still welcome more insights/comments/hypotheses.) Please also check there for corrections & clarifications.

So I wrote a python script that pulls the number of fics per fandom off the AO3 fandom pages and then another script that writes the data to a Google Sheet which is then connected to a DataStudio dashboard. My plan is to collect this data weekly so you can see things like trends over time and also fastest growing fandoms (% increase of fics WoW). I'll share once I have a little more data but right now I'm running it manually every Monday. Is there a way to automate that process for free? (Ideally one where my comp doesn't have to be on all the time?)
destinationtoast answered:
That sounds very cool! Looking forward to seeing it when you get to the point where you want to share. :)
I suspect any way of automating the process will either require using your own computer or paying money for cloud hosting. But I'll throw the question to my readers in case they have suggestions!
I need you to take this survey!
My name is Brianna Dym, and I'm an aca-fan at the University of Colorado Boulder researching everyday practices in transformative fandom. To do this, I have a survey linked here that asks about some day-to-day things you may or may not do as part of your involvement in fandom. If you are at least 18 years old and hang out in fan communities where people read and write fanfic and create and share fanworks, then this survey is for you! Please, take this survey and share it with your fandom friends! It takes roughly 15 minutes to complete. I want to reach a wide range of different kinds of folks in fandom, so your answers are important!
Take the survey now!
